Author Patricia A. Daley tells the reader a fascinating story of love, faith, abandonment, redemption, and loss in Wait for What? Our protagonist, Carissa Peyton, is taking a journey inward to discover what is most important in her life. She experiences a wide range of emotions as she discovers what truly motivates her, and what it is that she has been waiting for all this time.
Carissa was raised by her grandparents in Jamaica. Her father left her as an infant, and her mother abandoned her as a young girl. The hurt of abandonment haunted Carissa throughout most of her childhood until the day her grandmother invited her to church.
The sermon was about the saving grace of Jesus Christ, and it hit Carissa like a ton of bricks. From that day forward, she has been living her life by the rules of the Christian faith.
Carissa meets her parents again when she immigrates to the United States. At this point in her life, she is caring for herself and depends on no one. She must decide if she can forgive and create relationships with them after all of the years of their absence.
Carissa's main goal is to find a suitable husband. She longs for a traditional, Christian family life. Every time that she puts her heart and soul into a relationship she is disappointed. She fears that she will never find a man that will commit to marriage. These failed relationships lead Carissa to ask herself what it is that she is actually waiting for, and what truly fulfills her spiritually and emotionally.
This book closes with discussion questions that help to make the life lessons presented in Carissa's story clear. The story jumps too far ahead from time to time which disrupts the flow of the story. The acknowledgments are curiously placed after the preface in this book. This creates a feeling of exasperation for the reader. The beginning of Carissa’s story is halted by the author's notes and kind words to the editor and others.
This book was clearly written for single women with strong Christian values. However, people with an interest in Christianity would enjoy this story. The author compares Carissa's life experiences with stories told in the Bible and explains what can be learned from each of these experiences.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. I found Carissa's story to be very interesting and I was hoping for her to find happiness. At first, I was under the impression that the theme of the book was going to be that all girls should aspire to marriage, but thankfully, this wasn't the case. Unfortunately, the story skips ahead at times and important facts are completely left out. I want to know more about Carissa's successful career. Also, I am concerned about a character stuck in a horrible situation as her fate was never revealed. However, this is a story that will provide hope and inspiration to single Christian women.
